Education

Planting Seeds for Generations ~“Educate the child according to his way, and even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6

At the Mukono Jewish Community (MOJC), we believe that education is the bedrock of sustainable Jewish life. From our earliest days as a small group of zealous men and women searching for spiritual identity, we understood that without knowledge, without transmission, without intentional teaching, our community could not survive beyond a single generation. Today, that conviction has blossomed into a comprehensive educational vision that encompasses both sacred and secular learning, serving our children, our youth, and our adults as they grow into knowledgeable, committed Jews equipped to thrive in modern Uganda.

Our Educational Philosophy

The name “Obuyudaya” — our word for Jewishness — carries within it the understanding that being Jewish is not a static identity but a living, breathing reality that must be learned, practiced, and passed on. Education at MOJC is therefore not confined to classrooms or limited to childhood. It is a lifelong journey that begins with a child’s first Hebrew letter and continues through advanced adult study, encompassing everything our members need to live fully as Jews in the Ugandan context.

We draw inspiration from the traditional Jewish value of talmud Torah keneged kulam — the study of Torah is equivalent to all other commandments — because study leads to action, understanding leads to observance, and knowledge leads to love. Every educational program we offer is designed with this principle in mind: to transform information into lived experience, to turn students into practitioners, and to ensure that the light of Jewish learning continues to shine in Mukono for generations to come.

The Beit Midrash: Our House of Study

At the heart of our educational efforts stands the Beit Midrash — our house of study. Currently operating as an intensive program during holidays and special sessions, the Beit Midrash has already proven its transformative power in the lives of our members. It was through Beit Midrash sessions that our founding members prepared for conversion. It is through Beit Midrash learning that our children first encounter the stories of the Torah. It is through Beit Midrash discussions that our adults grapple with the complexities of Jewish law as it applies to daily life in Uganda.

But we dream of more.

Our vision is to extend the Beit Midrash beyond its current holiday-based model into a full-time, year-round educational institution that serves as the intellectual and spiritual heart of our community. We envision daily classes for adults at multiple levels — beginners learning to read Hebrew, intermediate students exploring the weekly Torah portion, advanced learners delving into Talmud and Jewish philosophy. We envision structured programming for youth that prepares them not only for bar and bat mitzvah but for a lifetime of Jewish engagement. We envision a place where the sounds of Torah study never cease, where the shelves bend under the weight of sacred texts, and where every member of the community knows they have a seat at the table of learning.

This expanded Beit Midrash would serve multiple functions:

  • Daily prayer education, ensuring every member can participate fully in communal worship
  • Hebrew language instruction, opening access to sacred texts in their original language
  • Torah and Haftarah reading, preparing b’nai mitzvah and Torah readers for communal leadership
  • Halacha (Jewish law) study, enabling members to navigate questions of observance with confidence
  • Jewish history and thought, connecting our community to the broader story of the Jewish people
  • Comparative ethics, exploring how Jewish values engage with Ugandan and contemporary contexts

The Beit Midrash is not merely a school. It is the engine of Jewish continuity, the forge where Jewish identity is strengthened, and the garden where the seeds of future leadership are planted.

Secular Education Sponsorship: Keeping Dreams Alive

We understand that Jewish education cannot flourish in a vacuum. Children who are hungry, children who are burdened by financial insecurity, children who are denied access to basic schooling cannot fully engage with the beauties of Torah. For this reason, MOJC has established a secular education sponsorship program that helps our children attend Ugandan schools and pursue their academic dreams.

Through this program, community members pool resources to cover school fees, uniforms, supplies, and other educational expenses for families facing financial hardship. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, to grow, and to build a future — and that the community bears collective responsibility for making this possible.

Students and Parents stand in Solidarity with Israel ai the aftermath of the October 7th attack that caused adverse international effects

The past years have brought unforeseen challenges. The Israel-Hamas war, while far from Ugandan shores, has rippled outward in ways we could not have anticipated. International donations that supported our community have been redirected to emergency needs in Israel. Tourists and visitors who brought both connection and contributions have disappeared from our roads. Economic pressures have intensified for families already living on the margins.

As a result, some of our students have been forced to stop studying.

Children who once walked to school each morning now stay home, their dreams deferred, their futures uncertain. Families who scrimped and saved to keep their children in class have exhausted their resources. The community safety net, stretched thin, cannot catch everyone.

These are not nameless statistics. These are our children. These are the ones who will read from our Torah in years to come. These are the ones who will lead MOJC into its next decade. These are the ones whose candles we hope to light at their weddings, whose children we hope to welcome into the covenant, whose voices we hope to hear in our Beit Midrash for decades to come.

We are asking for help.

Whether through one-time gifts or ongoing sponsorships, contributions to our education fund go directly to keeping children in school. A term of fees for a primary student. A year of secondary education for a teenager. Supplies and uniforms and transportation costs that make the difference between attending and staying home. Every shekel, every shilling, every dollar stretches further here than it might elsewhere, multiplied by the commitment of families who sacrifice everything for their children’s futures.

The Dream: A Hybrid Secular-Jewish School

As we work to meet today’s urgent needs, we continue to dream of tomorrow’s possibilities. The ultimate expression of our educational vision lies in a hybrid institution that would integrate Uganda’s national curriculum with intensive Jewish education under one roof.

We dream of a school where:

  • A child begins the day with morning prayers and proceeds to mathematics
  • The weekly Torah portion informs discussions of ethics and character
  • Hebrew shares classroom space with Luganda and English
  • Jewish holidays are celebrated alongside Ugandan national days
  • Students emerge fully prepared for Ugandan higher education and fully grounded in Jewish identity
  • The division between “Jewish learning” and “secular learning” dissolves, revealing the unity of all knowledge under the sovereignty of God

This school would serve not only MOJC children but also Jewish children from across Uganda, and potentially non-Jewish children seeking the quality education and values-based approach we would offer. It would stand as a beacon of what integrated Jewish life can look like in the African context — neither imitation of elsewhere nor isolation from the wider world, but a confident, creative synthesis of Jewish tradition and Ugandan reality.

The path to such a school is long. It requires land, buildings, trained teachers, developed curriculum, government accreditation, and sustained funding. But we have learned, since our founding in 2019, that long paths are walked one step at a time. The mikveh was built one brick at a time. The conversion process unfolded one lesson at a time. The Torah arrived one contribution at a time. The school, too, will come — if we keep walking.

Contribute to the expansion of our house of study, helping us move beyond holiday-based programming to full-time operation. Your support enables us to purchase books, compensate teachers, and reach more learners.

Invest in the Dream
Partner with us in the long-term vision of a hybrid secular-Jewish school. Whether through one-time gifts or sustained commitments, your investment plants seeds that will bear fruit for generations.

Spread the Word
Share our story with your community, your synagogue, your network. The more people know about MOJC, the more partners we find in this sacred work.

The prophet Isaiah taught that “all your children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.” The Hebrew word for children — banayich — can also be read as bonayich, meaning “your builders.” When we teach our children, we are building our community. When we invest in education, we are constructing the future. When we ensure that every child can learn, we are laying the foundation for peace.

At MOJC, we are builders. We built a mikveh. We built a community. We built a home for Torah. Now we are building minds, building souls, building the next generation of Ugandan Jews.
